What Is a Restaurant Tip Calculator?
A restaurant tip calculator is a simple tool that works out how much to tip on a restaurant bill, and what the final total comes to once that tip is added. Instead of doing the math in your head or reaching for a calculator app, you enter your bill amount and a tip percentage and get an instant result.
Behind the scenes, the calculator multiplies your bill by the tip percentage you choose to get the tip amount, then adds that tip back to the bill to get your total. It can also split that total between multiple people and, if you choose, factor tax into the calculation.

There is no single tip percentage that is correct in every situation. Tipping customs vary by country, region, service model and restaurant, and can also depend on the quality of service and local norms where you're dining.
This calculator is built with a U.S.-first audience in mind, where tipping on restaurant service is common practice. Even so, the right amount is ultimately up to you and whatever you consider appropriate for your situation.
The calculator's 15%, 18%, 20%, 22% and 25% presets are simply convenient starting points for the math — not recommendations or rules. You can always enter a custom percentage instead.

Should You Calculate a Tip
Before or After Tax?
This can come down to personal preference and local custom — there's no rule that applies everywhere. That's why, once you turn on Add Sales Tax, the calculator lets you choose the tip base yourself — Bill before tax or Bill plus tax — instead of silently choosing one method for you.
Before Tax
The tip is calculated on the pre-tax bill amount. Tax is then added separately to reach the total.
After Tax
The tip is calculated on the bill amount plus tax, so tax is included in the tip base.

To split a restaurant bill evenly, divide the total amount — including tip and any tax — by the number of people at the table. Equal splitting is only one way to divide a bill; people at the table can always agree on a different arrangement, such as paying for their own items.

Tip vs. Service Charge
A voluntary tip and a mandatory service charge are not necessarily the same thing. A tip is generally left at the customer's discretion, while a service charge can be added automatically to a bill by the restaurant — for example, for large parties.
Restaurant policies on service charges vary, and how a service charge is distributed or treated can also vary. If your bill already includes a service charge, check it before adding an additional tip on top, and refer to the restaurant's own policy or applicable local rules for specifics.
